Do You Need a New Mattress or Just a Topper? How to Tell

Your bed doesn't feel right any more, and you're weighing up a topper against a whole new mattress. One costs a few million rupiah, the other costs four times that, and everything you read online is trying to sell you one or the other.

There is actually a clean way to decide, and it takes about two minutes. It comes down to a single distinction: whether your problem is comfort or support.

5 cm Topper thickness that changes feel without changing support
4 cm Dip depth past which no topper will help you
~30% Roughly what a topper costs versus a new mattress

The Short Answer

A topper changes how the surface feels. It cannot restore what the core underneath has lost.

So if your mattress is structurally sound but too firm, or the surface has gone a bit tired, a topper is the right and much cheaper answer. If the core has softened, sagged or developed a dip, a topper will sit on top of that dip and sink into it with you.

People spend money on toppers hoping to avoid a mattress purchase, and end up spending twice. The tests below stop that.

"Nothing you put on top of a sagging mattress solves the sag. You are just adding a softer layer to a hole."

Three Tests That Decide It

Strip the bed to the bare mattress before you start. All three take a couple of minutes.

1

The Straight-Edge Test

Measures structural failure, not opinion
Do First

Lay a broom handle or any straight edge across the width of the mattress, over the spot where you actually sleep. Measure the gap at the deepest point with a tape, following the curve of the surface rather than measuring straight across.

Under 2 cm is normal settling and a topper will help. Between 2 and 4 cm, a topper buys you time but not years. Over 4 cm is structural failure — and on most warranties, including ours, that is a claimable defect rather than something you work around.

If you're over 4 cm, stop here. Check your warranty before buying anything. A prorated refund on a defective mattress beats spending on a topper that won't work.
2

The Morning Pattern Test

Your symptoms tell you which layer failed
Diagnostic

Pay attention to when the discomfort peaks. Pressure that builds while you're lying there — sore shoulders, aching hips, numb arms — is a surface problem. That is what a topper fixes.

Lower back stiffness on waking that eases once you move around is a support problem. Your spine sagged all night because the core stopped holding you level, and a soft layer on top makes that worse rather than better.

The same logic sits behind our mattress firmness guide — firmness is surface feel, support is structure, and they fail in different ways.
3

The Edge and Smell Test

The two things that rule a topper out entirely
Deal-Breaker

Sit on the edge where you'd put your shoes on. If it collapses under you, the structure is going and a topper will not bring it back.

Then put your face close to the bare surface and breathe in. A musty or sour smell means moisture has entered the core — common here, and not fixable from the outside. Surface cleaning treats the symptom while the problem stays inside. Preventing mould in a Bali mattress covers how it starts.

A musty mattress is finished regardless of how it measures on test one. Putting a new topper on it just gives you a clean layer over a contaminated core.

When a Topper Is Genuinely the Right Buy

Buy the topper if

  • Dip is under 2 cm
  • The mattress is simply too firm
  • Edges are still solid
  • No musty smell in the core
  • You're a side sleeper on a firm bed
  • Your body weight or position changed
  • It's a guest room used occasionally
  • The mattress is under five years old

The most common good case is the third one on that list: a mattress that was correctly built but bought a step too firm. That is a genuine mismatch between you and the surface, and adding 5 cm of softer latex fixes it properly rather than papering over it. Side sleepers on a medium-firm bed are the classic version — see choosing a mattress for side sleepers.

The second good case is change. You lost or gained weight, you're pregnant, you had surgery, you started sleeping on your side after years on your back. The mattress didn't fail — your requirements moved.

When You're Buying a Topper to Avoid a Decision

Worth being blunt about this, because it's the expensive mistake.

If your mattress is eight years old, has a visible dip, soft edges and you've been sleeping badly for a year, a topper is not a cheaper solution. It's a delay that costs money. You'll get a few months of marginal improvement, then buy the mattress anyway.

The honest arithmetic: a 160 × 200 topper is Rp 8.332.000. A Queen mattress at 25 cm is Rp 16.160.000. If the topper buys you eight months and you then replace anyway, you've spent Rp 24 million to get where Rp 16 million would have taken you. Our guide to signs it's time to replace your mattress lists the other tells.

Why Latex for a Topper

Topper material matters more than it does in a mattress core, because a topper sits directly under you with nothing between it and your body but a sheet.

Memory foam toppers contour deeply, which feels lovely and traps heat — the contouring itself reduces airflow. In a room that stays at 80% humidity all night, that's the wrong trade. Open-cell latex compresses and rebounds instead of holding a shape, so air keeps moving through it. The full material comparison is in the best mattress for hot and humid climates.

Latex also holds up. A topper takes the same nightly compression as a mattress with a fraction of the material doing the work, so a foam topper that flattens in two years is common. Latex tends to outlast the mattress it was bought to rescue — which means it can move onto the next one.

What a Latex Topper Costs

Size Topper (5 cm) New mattress (25 cm)
Single — 90 × 200 Rp 4.797.000 Rp 9.595.000
Single Standard — 100 × 200 Rp 5.302.000 Rp 10.605.000
Single XL — 120 × 200 Rp 6.312.000 Rp 12.120.000
Double — 140 × 200 Rp 7.322.000 Rp 14.140.000
Queen — 160 × 200 Rp 8.332.000 Rp 16.160.000
King — 180 × 200 Rp 9.342.000 Rp 18.180.000
Super King — 200 × 200 Rp 9.875.000 Rp 20.200.000

Prices in IDR, inclusive of VAT, 2026. Full mattress pricing by size and thickness is in the Bali mattress price guide.

Worth noticing that the ratio narrows as sizes go up. On a Single a topper is half the price of a new mattress; on a Super King it's closer to half again. The bigger your bed, the more a topper is worth trying first — provided it passes the three tests.

Living With a Topper

Two practical things people don't anticipate.

Your fitted sheets may not fit. Adding 5 cm takes a 25 cm mattress to 30 cm. Standard sheets will pop off the corners at night, which is its own kind of sleep disruption. Check your sheet depth before ordering.

It still needs airflow underneath. A topper adds another layer for moisture to sit in. Air the bed out, keep using a breathable protector rather than a sealed waterproof one, and follow the same routine as the mattress — caring for a mattress in Bali applies to both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper follows the shape of whatever is underneath it, so it sinks into the dip along with you. If the sag is more than about 2 cm, a topper only changes the surface feel of a bed that has already stopped supporting you.

Can a topper make a soft mattress firmer?

Only marginally, and it's the harder direction. Toppers are good at adding cushioning to a firm bed. Making a soft bed supportive means fixing the core, which a top layer cannot do.

How thick should a mattress topper be?

Around 5 cm is the useful range. Thinner than that and you barely change the feel; much thicker and you start interfering with the support underneath and creating sheet-fitting problems.

How long does a latex topper last?

Longer than a foam one, and often longer than the mattress it was bought for. Because it's removable, a good topper can carry over to your next mattress rather than being thrown out with the old one.

Will a topper make my bed sleep hotter?

A memory foam one probably will, because it contours closely and reduces airflow. An open-cell latex topper keeps air moving through the layer, so it stays much closer to neutral in a humid climate.

Comfort or Support — Decide That First

Run the straight-edge test, notice when your discomfort peaks, and check the edges and the smell. Those three answers tell you which purchase you're actually making.

A topper is an excellent buy for the right problem and a waste of money for the wrong one, and the difference isn't a matter of taste. It's whether the core underneath still does its job.

Measure before you shop. It takes two minutes and it can save you eight million rupiah.
