A decade ago a mattress was a firmness and a price. Now it is an engineered product, and the vocabulary has expanded faster than anyone's willingness to explain it. Latex, memory foam, hybrid, pocket spring, zoning, dual comfort — all used constantly in showrooms, rarely defined.
This is the reference version. Mattresses sorted four ways: by material, by construction, by size, and by the problem you are trying to solve. No single recommendation, just the map.
The Short Answer
Five materials cover nearly the whole market: latex, memory foam, hybrid, innerspring and pocket spring. Construction — all-foam, zoned, or adjustable — then decides how that material is arranged. Size and use case narrow it from there.
Material determines heat and lifespan. Construction determines feel. Get those two right and the rest is measurement.

Latex
Made from natural rubber tree sap, synthetic compounds, or a blend — and that distinction changes the product substantially, covered in natural vs synthetic latex. Memory foam
Softens with body heat and moulds closely, redistributing pressure at shoulders, hips and lower back. Excellent pressure relief, excellent motion isolation — the reason it suits side sleepers and light-sleeping couples. Hybrid
A coil support core with foam or latex comfort layers on top. Better airflow and stronger edges than all-foam designs, with responsiveness from the coils and cushioning from the layers. Performance depends entirely on the quality and thickness of each layer, so "hybrid" on its own tells you very little.
Innerspring
Connected metal coils with thin padding above. Firm, bouncy, airy, and the cheapest way to get real support. Less pressure relief than foam or latex, and motion travels across the bed because the coils are linked. Compared head to head in latex vs innerspring.
Pocket spring
Each coil wrapped and moving independently, so the surface responds locally rather than as one sheet. Much less motion transfer and better contouring than a connected innerspring, and usually paired with foam or latex on top. Common in better spring and hybrid mattresses.

All-foam
Every layer is foam — softer above for comfort, denser below for support. Quiet, with minimal motion transfer, which suits shared beds. The variable that decides everything is foam density: low-density foam feels fine initially and develops a body impression far sooner.
Zoned support
Firmness varies along the length of the mattress — typically firmer under hips and lower back, softer under shoulders and legs — to hold the spine neutral across positions. Dual comfort and adjustable
Different firmness on each side, either by flipping or by rearranging internal layers. This is the only construction that solves two people with genuinely different builds sharing one bed — and the only one where a firmness mistake is reversible rather than permanent.
3. By Size
Indonesian sizing runs by width, with length almost always 200 cm. Measure the room before anything else, because a mattress that fits the bed frame but leaves no walking space is a problem you cannot fix later.

Indonesian sizes do not map cleanly onto US or European names — always check the centimetres, never the label.

Most people arrive at this decision with a symptom rather than a material preference.

What is the difference between innerspring and pocket spring?
Innerspring coils are connected, so the mattress responds as one unit and motion travels across it. Pocket springs are wrapped individually and move independently, giving better contouring and much less partner disturbance.
Is a hybrid mattress better than all-foam?
It depends on what you want. Hybrids generally breathe better and have stronger edges; all-foam is quieter and isolates motion better. "Hybrid" describes the structure, not the quality — the layer specifications still decide.
Does zoning actually work?
When the zones line up with your body, yes. When they do not — because you are unusually tall or short — the firmer section can end up under the wrong part of your back and work against you.
