The Short Answer
Yes, a little, and mostly in the first month. The comfort layers loosen with use, and your body gets used to the new surface. Together those two changes can take a mattress from “too hard” to “fine”.
They cannot take it from firm to soft. If you are still waking up sore after about a month of sleeping on it every night, more waiting will not fix it. You need to change the surface.
“Break-in takes the edge off a firm mattress. It does not change which mattress you bought.”
Two Things Change, and Only One Is the Mattress
The mattress. Foams are at their stiffest when new. The first few weeks of body weight and movement loosen them, and the surface settles into the feel it will keep for most of its life.
You. Your muscles and joints have spent years adjusting to your old bed, including its dips. A new, level surface holds you differently, and for the first couple of weeks “different” reads as “hard”. Much of what people call a mattress softening is really their own body adapting.
This is why a new mattress so often feels wrong in week one and normal by week four, even though the mattress itself has changed very little.
How Much Softening to Expect, by Material
| Material |
Break-in |
What changes |
| Natural latex |
Short and slight |
Very resilient. Feels much the same in month six as in week two. |
| Memory foam |
A few weeks |
Loosens noticeably with use, and feels softer again in a warm room. |
| Polyurethane foam |
A few weeks |
Softens early, then keeps softening slowly as it wears. |
| Pocket spring |
A few weeks |
The padding on top settles. The springs themselves change slowly. |
General behaviour. Density and build quality matter more than the label on the material.
One detail matters in the tropics. Memory foam reacts to temperature: it is firmer when cool and softer when warm. A mattress you tried in an air-conditioned showroom will feel softer in a bedroom that sits at 29°C. If it felt slightly too firm in the shop, that works in your favour. If it felt borderline soft, it does not. Our comparison of latex and memory foam covers how the two behave in heat.
How Long to Wait
Give it about 30 days, sleeping on it every night. The first week is unreliable. By weeks three and four, both the mattress and your body have done most of the changing they are going to do.
Watch the direction. If each week is a little better than the last, keep going. If day 30 feels the same as day five, you have your answer.
There is one exception. Sharp pain, an arm that goes numb, or pain that is getting worse are not things to sit out for a month. Change the surface now, and see a doctor or physiotherapist if it continues.
Can You Speed It Up?
Sleep on it every night
Break-in comes from use. Moving back to the sofa or the old bed for a few nights resets your body's side of the process.
Do not jump on it
It is a popular tip and a bad one. Jumping does not soften a mattress evenly, and it is exactly the kind of use that warranties exclude, ours included.
Check what is underneath
A mattress on a solid platform or on the floor feels firmer than the same mattress on a slatted base with some give. Do not move it to the floor to test this, though. In a humid climate that is how mould under a mattress starts.
Check what is on top
A thick waterproof protector pulled drum-tight makes any surface feel harder. Loosen it or try a night without it. Our guide to mattress protectors in a humid climate explains which type to use.
Softening Is Not Sagging
Break-in softening is even across the surface, and it stops. Sagging is local, usually where your hips lie, and it keeps getting deeper. The first is normal. The second is wear.
Warranties draw the same line. Ours does not cover the normal increase in softness during break-in or over time, and it does cover a visible indentation of more than 4 cm. The full terms are on the warranty page, and the other signs of a worn mattress are in our guide to when to replace one.
If It Is Still Too Firm After a Month
Add a topper
A softer layer on top changes how the surface feels without touching the support underneath. It is the standard fix for a mattress that is sound but too hard. See whether you need a topper or a new mattress.
Use the trial
If the mattress came with a trial period and you are still inside it, this is what it is for. Check the terms before the window closes.
Change the layers, if your mattress has them
On an Original Mattress you do not have to wait at all. It ships with three comfort layers, and moving the soft one to the top takes about five minutes. Each side of the bed is set separately, so only the person who finds it too firm has to change anything. The steps are in our guide to the layers, and the options for couples are in different firmness on each side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do mattresses get softer over time?
Yes. They soften slightly in the first few weeks of use, then very slowly for years as the materials wear. Natural latex changes least.
How long does a new mattress take to soften?
Most of the change happens in the first 30 days of nightly use. Your body's adjustment takes two to three weeks of that.
Will a firm mattress ever feel soft?
No. Break-in makes a firm mattress slightly less firm. It does not move it into a different category.
Does jumping or walking on a mattress make it softer?
Not in any useful way. It loads the mattress unevenly and can damage it. Sleeping on it every night does the job.
Should I buy a firm mattress and let it soften?
It is a gamble. Buy for the body you have now, or buy a mattress whose firmness you can change.
Does heat make a mattress softer?
Memory foam, yes. It softens as it warms. Natural latex is far less sensitive to temperature.
Too Firm? Move a Layer
The Original ships with three comfort layers. Put the soft one on top tonight instead of waiting a month to find out. 100 nights to decide.

Wait a Month, Then Act
A firm mattress gives a little in its first month, and you adapt to it over the same weeks. That combination fixes a mattress that is slightly too hard. It does not fix one that is plainly wrong for you.
So set a date 30 days out. If you are sleeping better by then, you are done. If not, stop waiting and change the surface: a topper, the trial, or a different layer on top.
Patience is the right call for four weeks. After that it is only delay.
