The Short Answer
A latex pillow suits you if you want a pillow that holds its height all night, and you sleep warm. Latex springs back instead of packing down, and its open structure lets air through. Those are the two things fibre, down and memory foam do worst.
It will not suit you if you like to scrunch a pillow into shape, fold it under your arm, or sink into it. Latex pushes back. Some people love that from the first night and some never do.
“Fibre and down are comfortable until they go flat. Latex is the pillow material that keeps its height.”
What a Latex Pillow Is
The core is foamed rubber. In a natural latex pillow that rubber comes from the sap of the rubber tree. Synthetic latex is made from petrochemicals to imitate it, and many pillows sold as “latex” are a blend of the two. The difference shows up in breathability and in how long the pillow keeps its spring, which we cover in natural vs synthetic latex.
Latex pillows come in two constructions.
Solid. One moulded piece, usually with rows of small holes running through it for ventilation. The height is the same every night, and the piece can be shaped with a contour for the neck.
Shredded. Small pieces of latex inside a casing. It is softer and can be pushed into shape, with air channels between the pieces. It needs a shake now and then to stay even.
The Pros
It keeps its height
Latex is elastic. Press it and it returns to shape. Fibre and down compress a little more every night, which is why a pillow that was the right height in January is too low by December.
It stays cooler
Air moves through the open cells and the ventilation holes each time you turn your head. In a bedroom that sits near 30°C, that is the difference between a pillow you flip to find the cool side and one you do not think about.
It suits humid rooms
Latex resists dust mites and mould better than fibre fillings do, and that matters in a climate where bedding never fully dries out. The reasons are in our guide to dust mites and allergies in the tropics.
It supports instead of sinking
Because it pushes back, a latex pillow holds your head at the height you chose. Your neck stays in line with your spine for the whole night, not only for the first hour.
The Cons
It is heavy
Latex is dense. A latex pillow weighs noticeably more than a fibre one, which you notice when you change the bed and not when you sleep.
It is springy
The same resilience that keeps the height gives the pillow a slight bounce. If you are used to down or memory foam, give it a week or two before deciding.
You cannot reshape a solid one
A solid latex pillow will not fold or scrunch. The height you buy is the height you get, so choosing the right one matters more than it does with a soft pillow.
It has a scent at first
Natural latex has a faint sweet smell for the first few days. It airs out quickly.
It costs more up front
A latex pillow costs more than a fibre one. Whether it is better value depends on how often you were replacing the old ones.
Latex allergy
If you have a diagnosed latex allergy, speak to your doctor before buying any latex bedding, even though the core sits inside a cover.

Which Latex Pillow for How You Sleep
A pillow has one job: to fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck stays level. How big that gap is depends on your sleeping position. Side sleepers have the widest gap, stomach sleepers almost none. Our pillow guide explains how to measure it.

The Premium Pillow is the firmest of the three: one solid piece of latex shaped to fill the space between shoulder and head.
The Ergonomic Pillow has a contoured core with a high side and a low side. Turn it round to change how much support your neck gets.
The Deluxe Pillow is the softest, in a classic shape, for stomach sleepers and anyone who likes a lower pillow.
If you sleep on your side and your top knee drops forward, a bolster between the knees does for your hips what the pillow does for your neck. See the Deluxe Bolster.
Looking After It
Wash the cover, not the core. A removable cover goes in the machine at 30°C. Use a pillowcase over it as well, and wash that weekly.
Never soak the latex. Do not machine-wash the core or hold it under a tap. If something spills on it, blot it and let it dry in moving air.
Keep it out of the sun. Direct sunlight breaks latex down. Air the pillow in the shade, by an open window, not on a balcony rail at midday.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are latex pillows good for side sleepers?
Yes. Side sleepers need a firm pillow that holds its height, and that is what latex does best. Choose a firm, higher pillow.
Do latex pillows get hot?
Less than most. Latex is open-cell and usually ventilated, so it holds less heat than memory foam.
Is a latex pillow too firm?
Latex is supportive but springy. It pushes back gently instead of collapsing. In our range the Deluxe is the softest, the Premium the firmest, and the Ergonomic sits in between.
Do latex pillows smell?
Natural latex has a faint sweet scent for the first few days. It fades quickly with airing.
Can you wash a latex pillow?
Wash the cover. Do not wash or soak the latex core, and do not dry it in direct sun.
How long does a latex pillow last?
Longer than fibre or down, which usually flatten within a year or two. Replace a latex pillow when it stops springing back.

Choose the Height, Then the Feel
Latex is the right pillow material if you are tired of pillows going flat and you sleep warm. It is the wrong one if you want something to sink into.
Start from your sleeping position, because that sets the height you need. Then pick the feel: firm for side sleepers, contoured for back sleepers, soft for stomach sleepers.
A pillow that is the right height on night one should still be the right height a year later.
