How to Actually Test a Mattress at Home (and Why 30 Days Matters)

Here is the uncomfortable truth about showrooms: lying on a mattress for ten minutes, fully dressed, in the middle of the afternoon, tells you almost nothing about how you will sleep on it.

You are not tired. You are not in your pyjamas. You are not going to be there for eight hours while your body temperature drops and your muscles let go. A home trial is the only real test — but only if you run it properly.

Why New Mattresses Feel Wrong at First

Two things are happening in week one, and neither is about whether the mattress suits you.

The mattress is still settling. Latex and foam that have been compressed for shipping need time to fully decompress and reach their intended firmness. A roll-packed mattress in particular is not at its final state on night one — which is also why it should be unpacked within 30 days of delivery rather than left rolled in a spare room.

Your body is still adapting. This is the bigger factor and almost nobody accounts for it. If you slept on a sagging mattress for six years, your muscles learned to compensate for it. Put on a correctly supportive surface, those compensations become the thing that feels wrong. It takes weeks to unlearn.

The result is a genuinely counterintuitive pattern: a mattress that is right for you can feel worse than your old one for the first week or two. Judge it then and you will return the correct mattress.

"Your old mattress trained your body. The first two weeks on a new one are mostly your back arguing with a habit."

What to Expect, Week by Week

Period What is normal
Nights 1–3 Feels unfamiliar, possibly firmer than expected. Mild new-material smell that fades with airing.
Week 1 Some stiffness as your body adjusts. Not a verdict.
Week 2 Surface settles; you stop noticing the bed as much.
Weeks 3–4 The real signal appears. Mornings should be clearly better than before.
Day 30+ Judge it now. This is the honest reading.

Roughly what most people report. Individual adjustment varies, particularly if you are coming off a badly worn mattress.

Set the Trial Up Properly

Three things worth doing on day one, because they decide whether the trial gives you clean information — and whether you can actually return it.

Protect it from the start. Use a breathable mattress protector immediately. A stained mattress generally cannot be returned, and this is the single most common reason a trial fails at the return stage rather than the sleeping stage.

Check the base before the mattress arrives. A good mattress on a bad base gives you a bad trial. Slats should be no more than 10 cm apart, and a solid platform needs ventilation. Get this wrong and you are testing your bed frame, not the mattress.

Keep the paperwork and the labels. Both returns and warranty claims need proof of purchase, and removing the product label voids the warranty entirely. File the invoice on delivery day.

What to Track

Memory is unreliable about sleep. By week three you will not remember whether week one was worse. Write three things down each morning — thirty seconds on your phone is enough.

Note each morning

  • Any pain, and exactly where
  • Whether it fades as you move
  • Times you remember waking
  • Whether you woke up hot
  • How rested you feel, 1–10
  • How long you took to fall asleep

The second item is the most diagnostic. Stiffness that eases within fifteen minutes of getting up points to a support problem — too soft. Pressure that built while you were lying there and eases once you stand points the other way — too firm. Our firmness guide covers how to read those patterns.

The Day 30 Checks

Compare your notes, not your memory. Look at week one against week four. A rising trend means the mattress is working and your body has adapted. A flat or falling trend means something is genuinely wrong.

Check spinal alignment. Lie in your usual position and have someone photograph you from behind or the side. Side sleepers: the spine should be a straight horizontal line. Back sleepers: a flat hand should slide under the lower back with light resistance.

Separate the mattress from the pillow. Neck and shoulder problems are frequently pillow problems, and a new mattress changes how far your shoulder sinks — which changes the pillow height you need. Swap pillows for a few nights before concluding the mattress is at fault.

Rule out the room. If the main complaint is heat, work out whether it is the bed or the bedroom. A cool room with a warm surface under you is a mattress issue; a stuffy room throughout is ventilation. See why sleeping in Bali feels so hot.

If It Is Wrong, Work Out Which Direction

A return is not the only option, and knowing the direction of the problem saves you from repeating it.

Too firm is the easier fix. Pressure at the shoulders and hips, numbness, tossing to find a comfortable spot. A softer comfort layer solves this without replacing anything structural.

Too soft is not fixable from the top. Lower back stiffness on waking, a feeling of rolling to the middle, effort required to change position. Nothing you add on top restores support to a core that is not holding you level.

Adjustable firmness changes the maths. If the internal layers can be reconfigured, a firmness mismatch stops being a return and becomes an adjustment — which is the main practical argument for buying that way in the first place.

How the 100-Night Trial Works

The specifics, because "100-night trial" means different things at different companies.

You keep the mattress a minimum of 30 days before requesting a return — for exactly the decompression and adaptation reasons above. After day 30 and before day 100, you can arrange a return by contacting customer service, who provide the refund instructions.

You will need the original invoice or sales receipt and a stated reason, and a photo of the mattress may be requested. The item needs to come back in good condition, which is why the protector matters from night one.

The trial is separate from the 10-year warranty, which covers manufacturing faults and indentations deeper than 4 cm rather than comfort preference. Full terms for both are on the warranty and returns page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get used to a new mattress?

Usually two to four weeks. The mattress finishes decompressing in the first week or so; your body takes longer to unlearn the compensations it built up on your old one. Week one is not a fair test.

Why does my new mattress feel worse than my old one?

Often because it is supporting you correctly and your muscles are used to compensating for something that was not. That mismatch feels like discomfort. If it has not improved by day 30, then it is worth treating as a real problem.

Can I return a mattress if I simply do not like it?

Within the trial window, yes — comfort is a valid reason. You need to have kept it at least 30 days, returned it before day 100, and kept it in good condition with proof of purchase.

Does a mattress protector affect the trial?

It protects it. A stained mattress generally cannot be returned, so a breathable protector from night one is the cheapest insurance on the whole purchase.

Is a showroom visit worth it at all?

Yes, for ruling things out and for asking what is inside the mattress. It just cannot tell you how you will sleep. Treat it as narrowing the shortlist rather than making the decision — showroom locations are here.

Give It Thirty Days, Then Read Your Notes

Protect it from night one, check the base is right, write three lines each morning, and do not form a verdict before day 30. That is the whole method.

Most people who return a mattress in week two were returning an adjustment period rather than a bad mattress. Most people who keep a bad one past day 100 did so because they never wrote anything down and could not tell whether it was improving.

Thirty seconds a morning settles it either way.
